PROBLEM

Craigslist has been around since 1995. Since then, the site has remained relatively unchanged.  It’s time to modernize Craigslist, so it’s more visually appealing and easy to use.

THE SOLUTION

A redesign of Craigslist incorporating the best UX/UI practices into a responsive web app.

MOOD BOARD

Two mood boards were created.

Mood Board 1 had a more neutral palette and fell closer to Craiglist’s brand identity as a classified.

DESIGN

User stories were created, incorporating them into user flows before sketching them on low-fi wireframes.

ITERATIONS

Several iterations were created to reach the final design.

ANIMATIONS

Animations were added at key points.

REFINING THE NAVIGATION

The animated nav bar was removed, moving its functions into a stack menu to free up valuable screen space.

ACCESSIBILITY

Designed with inclusivity in mind. Incorporating accessibility for specific people in need can eventually benefit all people.

  • Designed to meet WCAG 2.2 standards. Designed with Google Material i/o 2 guidelines.

  • Responsive design for different screen sizes. No flashing or blinking content can trigger seizures for people with epilepsy.

  • Multiple language options.

  • Dark mode for less eye strain.

CONCLUSION

Redesigning Craigslist

The original website inundated people with information. People typically visit Craigslist with one objective at a time; for example, to find a job or to buy something. There was no need to offer all choices on the home screen, so I organized the navigation into topics. Location is important when browsing Craigslist as all the functions are listed by location. The weather is also important if people want to meet a potential seller that day or go out to a yoga class or job interview.

What I’d do if I had more time

I want to add animated weather effects. I would conduct user testing to iterate the design.

Final thoughts

I enjoyed the process of redesigning Craigslist to improve peoples’ experience by simplifying the navigation. Craigslist has been around since the 1990s without much change to the UX/UI. I hope my redesign does the User Experience justice.
