DESIGN PROMPT

4 Day Design Challenge

AMC Auto is a nationwide web-based car dealership.

The objective of this challenge is to design the main page of the customer’s account page on a desktop.

Please show us your design process focused on the core components of UI/UX design:

  • Information Architecture

  • Interaction Design

  • Usability

  • Wireframing

  • Visual Design

You are free to choose your own colors, fidelity levels, and architecture. The design challenge must be completed within 4 days

Good luck and most importantly have fun with the challenge!

DAY 1. DISCOVERING COMPETITORS

Because the timeframe was only 4 days, I started with a Google search of top online car dealerships.

DAY 1.

I studied the customer account pages of the 6 competitors.

5 of the 6 competitors had no useful customer account page. Carmax had the best customer account pages. I used Carmax as a starting point.

  • Autotraders website was not working.

  • AutoNation, Cars.com and Carvana customer accounts only stored user and password data

  • Ashbury had no customer account page

  • Carmax had an organized useful customer account page with a complete vertical side menu, a welcome screen with Favorites and Next Steps to take.

DAY 1. SITEMAP

I ran a content audit on the customer account page of Carmax and used it to Sitemap a customer account page for AMC.

DAY 2. AI LAYOUT AND SURVEY

On the second day, I used AI to generate some quick website layout ideas.

I used Midjourney AI to generate quick website layouts.

I surveyed 20 car owners on their preferred layout for a customer accounts page.

The winner was the first layout (top left).

DAY 2. WIREFRAMES

I created a wireframe for the customer account page.

I took the sitemap I created from referencing Carmax and designed it into the layout selected from the survey. I added a search field up top and an area on the bottom for users to save favorite cars. The idea of the Next Steps was taken from Carmax, it could guide the user to know what action to take. I also had a floating messenger button to talk to automated or live help which would be accessible from almost any page.

DAY 2. ACCESSIBILITY

Designed with inclusivity in mind. Incorporating accessibility for specific people in need can eventually benefit all people.

  • Designed to meet WCAG 2.2 standards. Designed with Google Material i/o 2 guidelines.

  • Responsive design for different desktop screen sizes. No flashing or blinking content can trigger seizures for people with epilepsy.

  • Multiple language options.

DAY 3-4. FINAL DESIGN

Customer account page

I started my final design on the 3rd day. I went straight from the low-fidelity wireframe to High Fidelity. As there was no branding yet I tried to keep the colors more neutral and used blue as a main color to ensure the colors would work in most situations.

DAY 4. DESIGN GUIDES

With my remaining time, I created a basic design guide for web and mobile.

CONCLUSION

Short Design Challenge

To recap the design challenge called for designing the customer account page of AMC Automotive. It was a short challenge that I completed solo in 4 days to meet the timeline. I wanted this addition to my portfolio to offer contrast and variety against my longer projects that took months to complete. AMC Automotive is not a real company.

What I’d do if I had more time

I would design the mobile screen. I would do more user testing by doing a larger survey or doing usability tests with a mock-up.

Final thoughts

I enjoyed showing what I could complete in a short period. Since the challenge called for only one page, I felt it was more about showing the user interface, and in these short deadlines, there would be no time to recruit for usability testing so I did the best I could within the 4-day timeframe. I had a lot of fun and was happy with the results of the 4-day challenge.
